Professional Music Education on YouTube and the Challenge of Platformization
A growing number of music educators make their living through YouTube. They reach enormous audiences and engage more students with one video than most educators could in a career. The platform is as much an influence on their teaching as their students. This is an example of platformization where the affordances and structures of digital platforms shape content and creative products. In this paper, I explore the benefits and detriments of platformized music education and provide a framework for examining and better understanding platforms’ roles in teaching and learning online.
